Usenet connection settings
Connect a newsreader to the station using TLS on port 563.
Before departure
You need a separate newsreader that supports encrypted NNTP connections. The web reader is still under construction. The server and port are in the channel briefing beside these steps.
Connect
- Add a news or NNTP account in your newsreader.
- Enter the server hostname from the briefing. No
https://in front of it. - Set the port to 563 and select SSL/TLS for the connection. Client labels vary; this is the encrypted connection setting, not an ordinary web proxy.
- Connect and retrieve the list of available newsgroups.
- Subscribe to a group that interests you and read its recent messages and posting guidance.
If the server asks for credentials, use the ones you were given for it. They come from the station commander, not from this page.
If the signal fails
Check the hostname, port, and encryption setting first. A news: link may hand off to a configured application; it does not configure TLS for you. Use the settings above when adding the server manually.
If connecting works but posting does not, note the exact server response. Reading and posting permissions can differ. Include that response, with private information removed, in a problem report.
The news server has no automated probe yet. If it does not answer, tell us; the board will not have noticed.
The discussion predates the station. Please allow it a moment to finish its sentence.
